Life Framer awarded Vesuvio, 11 luglio 2017 with the Honorary Mention for the theme “The face of the Earth”
“A swathe of fiery light cuts through the centre of this dense forest scene, accentuating the vertical trunks that rise in the middle distance. It creates a mesmerizing splash of rich color against a subtle color palette. In his statement, Maurizio describes the fires that ravaged the National park of Vesuvius in 2017, and his emotional response – to wander through its woodland and take photos in a healing process as the forest itself slowly healed. The reds and oranges hint at that past destruction, but are here rendered as something beautiful and life-giving.” – Life Framer
Artist statement
In July 2017, the National park of Vesuvius was destroyed by numerous fires. More than 2700 hectares of pine forests were lost, 50 millions bees died. I grew up with my family in those pine forests for twenty five years, the Vesuvius was a presence for me. When I left my family home it became landscape. When Vesuvius began to burn it stopped being landscape and it awakened as an interior presence within me. The day after I decided to go to help firemen to stop the fires. When fires were extinguished I began to take pictures for three and a half years later.
